Thomas Raefell Cox

Our courageous, strong willed and loving Father, Grandpa, Brother and Friend Raefell (Raffey) Cox passed away quietly on Saturday Aug. 5, 2017 at his home in Enterprise, UT.  He was born on May 28, 1953 in Payson, Utah to Vernon Louis Cox and Jennie McFarlane Cox, he was their youngest child. He attended Park View and Shelly elementary schools and played trumpet in the high school band, he graduated from Payson High School in 1971.  Shortly after graduation he served in the United States Marines where his duty was to drive tanks.

He married Debra Joy Black of Payson, on Feb. 15 1974. Raefell and Debra had two children: a daughter Malinda and a son Jeremy Dale. On May 10th, 1976 Raefell and his small family was involved in a tragic auto accident near Goshen, Utah which took the life of Debra and their two children. Raefell sustained serious injuries that took him years to recover from, both physically and mentally. Raefell later married Helen Sperry on Valentines Day 1977.  Helen had two daughters from a previous marriage: Cassie and Jody and they had two children together: Amber and Dillon.  After several years of marriage Raefell and Helen divorced.

Raefell worked numerous jobs, including Mining (Tintic Burgin Mine) and Steel Worker (Geneva Steel), he was a dedicated and hard worker.  His witty personality and charismatic charm created many lifelong friendship that meant the world to him. He had a talent of creating and building many gifts with his hands that were treasured by all that received them. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting one of his most beloved outdoor adventures was to Alaska with his brother and nephew.  Unfortunately most of his life he suffered from Rheumatoid arthritis and sever back problems. His health eventually started to impact his quality of life and caused him to take disability and retire during the last few recent years.  Raefell retired in Enterprise, UT so he could be close to his son Dillon and the outdoors he enjoyed. This gave him great pleasure as he would often spend time fishing and visiting with friends and playing with his grand children.

Raefell was preceded in death by his Father Vernon Cox, Mother Jennie McFarlane Cox, wife Debra Joy Black and Children Malinda and Jeremy, brothers Donald Ray Cox, Douglas Warren Snow, William Louis Cox (Karen) and a sister Anna Louise Cox Redding (Randy). He is survived by brothers Kim (Carol) Cox, Kalama WA and LaMar (Pam) Cox, America Fork.  His children Cassie (Cody) Franz , Payson, Jody (Chad) Smith, Lehi Stephanie Anderson, American Fork, Amber Stallings, Payson and Dillon (Treasa) Cox, Enterprise, UT.  He had 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren as well as several dozen cousins, nieces and nephews.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Zions Way Home Health and Hospice and to his friends and neighbors in Enterprise who contributed to making our dads last days on earth more comfortable.

Arrangements are under the direction of Payson Walker Mortuary. Graveside services and interment will be held at the Payson City Cemetery 400 North 800 East Friday August 11th starting at 10:00 am.
