Lois Cathlyn Stone Schumann

Lois Cathlyn Stone Schumann passed away June 9, 2017 in Surprise, Arizona. Cathlyn was born March 8, 1952 in Spanish Fork, Utah to Thane E and Lola Nielsen Stone. She enjoyed an idyllic childhood on “the Nielsen block” surrounded by her extended family. Cousins were her first playmates, Aunt Lois and Aunt Floss looked after her, and Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen were right next door.

Cathlyn attended school in Spanish Fork and was blessed to have a circle of friends she remained close to throughout her life. After graduating from Spanish Fork High School, she attended Brigham Young University.  In high school and at BYU, she excelled in business classes and learned valuable skills that provided the foundation for her career.

While attending BYU, she met Rolf Hyrum Schumann and they married in 1974. They raised their family on ranches in Utah, California and Idaho. Ranch life taught their three children the value of hard work and commitment to doing their best. She and Rolf later divorced. While proud of all the accomplishments of her children, she was especially grateful that each of them completed their college education.

Cathlyn was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings, but especially loved serving the Primary children. She was an accomplished pianist, accompanying soloists and choirs. She also served as ward organist in several wards in which she lived.

She held numerous positions as a secretary/administrative assistant and was always thankful she had developed the skills needed to support herself and her family. She was employed until 2008 when poor health necessitated her retirement. At that time she relocated to Arizona; but no matter where she lived, Spanish Fork was always home.

She is survived by her children Jennifer (Robert) Fox of Brentwood, California; Rachel (Eric) Bennett of Surprise, Arizona; and Matthew (Beth) of Roswell, Georgia. She adored her nine grandchildren who filled her life with joy. She was blessed with siblings who provided lessons in life and laughter: Steven (Nancy), Brad (Judy), Howard (Cindy), and Cynthia (Clark) Partridge. She was preceded in death by her parents who supported her beyond measure and left a lasting legacy of love for family and BYU football.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Spanish Fork Fourth Ward building, 353 East 400 North, at 10:00 a.m.  There will be a viewing Friday, June 16, 2017 at Walker Mortuary, 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 9:00-9:45 a.m. prior to the services.

Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.

I’m so saddened to hear of Cathlyn’s passing. I have many fond memories of growing up in good ole 4th ward. Cath was a great friend and will be sorely missed.

  5. Stephanie Stone Olsen

I will forever cherish the summer I got to go to Idaho and spend a couple of weeks on the Schumann ranch and aunt Cathy made sure we had plenty to do and took us wherever we wanted to go. Card games just won’t be the same without her loud laughter. I’m glad you are free of pain now but will forever miss you!
    Lots of Love-Stephanie
